PLACE: HIKE #91 - 11/13/11 - Garin Park
TIME: 1:00pm - 3:30pm
TRAILS: High Ridge Loop to Dry Creek
DIRECTIONS: From Mission and Jackson in Hayward (1), go south on Mission (238) about 3.0 miles. Turn left on Garin Avenue, which is just south of Industrial Parkway. You can also take the Industrial Parkway exit (2) if you’re coming from the north on I-880. Go to the end of Garin Avenue (about two-thirds of a mile), and you’ll come to the entrance of the park. There is a $4 parking fee, which is waived for park members. Once you enter the park, drive around the circular drive to the left and park in this area. There are some old farming machines scattered around this area, beyond which is the bridge that leads to the visitors center. We will meet at the visitors center (a big red barn), then walk to the north end of Jordan Pond to get on the High Ridge Loop Trail. At the end of the hike we will return to Jordan Pond. DETAILS: The meeting place for this hike will be the visitors center, which is a big red barn, near the entrance, and just north of Jordan Pond. From the barn, we’ll head toward Jordan Pond, where we will begin our hike. We will start on the High Ridge Loop Trail, which begins at the north end of Jordan Pond. This trail heads up to the ridge top and provides some beautiful views of the South Bay. The High Ridge Trail heads downhill and connects to the Meyers Ranch Trail. Take a left on the Meyers Ranch Trail, and this will lead to the Dry Creek Trail. There is a very gentle elevation change of about 400 feet during the first half of the hike, and the rest is mostly flat. Take the Meyers Ranch trail back to Jordan Pond. The entire hike is between 3.0-3.5 miles and will last about 2.5-3.0 hours. Have your kids use the facilities at the visitors center before we begin, as there are none throughout the duration of the hike. Hikers with baby joggers will find the last third of this trail challenging, as some parts of the trail are narrow, especially the footbridges. The first half of the hike is entirely in the sun, so make sure to cover the little ones well. The last half snakes through the trees along Dry Creek back to Jordan Pond and the picnic area. SCHEDULE: 1:00pm SHARP – meet up and head out. If you’re late…catch up to us!
